While the science of farming continues to add to the farmer’s chances of producing good crops each year, it is also vitally important to remember the basics that brought success in years gone by – the kinds of basics that now seem like simple common sense. Take aeration, for instance. The idea of opening up the soil a little to allow life-promoting air in seems perfectly obvious when you think about it.

Oxygen is as important under the surface as it is above – and it’s not just that celebrated gas we should be thinking about. Nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and other vital nutrients stand a better chance of adding their contribution to the underground magic if the soil is well aerated and has a bit of looseness in which these important elements can have a chance to work.

Then there is the matter of penetration and growth: as roots begin to do their stuff, they naturally need to reach out, and well-aerated soil gives them the chance to move. If your soil is not aerated, everything down there is constricted, and that is not what nature needs.

Fortunately, there are aerator machines to help, and while they may not look like the most sophisticated pieces of kit in the agricultural world, a good one can do the elementary job superbly and produce stupendous results.

The Importance of Strength and Quality in an Aerator

When you think of the tonnes of soil we’re dealing with, plus the weight of the farm machinery that routinely presses down as it passes, not to mention the subtle but ever-present force of gravity, it is clear that man-made machinery has got its work cut out, so it is essential to equip yourself with tools that are up to the job. You are essentially going to be poking pieces of steel through a hardened surface and a highly-resistant layer of compacted earth, so this is no place for cutting corners in terms of strength and durability – not if you want to be able to do it again next year and the foreseeable future with the same piece of equipment.

You need the finest materials, state-of-the-art design and the best engineering – and if you can get all this from an Australian company, so much the better. Everything from high wear-resistant tines to large capacity greaseable rotor bearings need to be taken into account, along with the parts that are often taken for granted: the infrastructure that holds the working parts in place and attaches the aerator to the tractor. You need a chain with no weak links, an assembly in which every part stands with its fellows to get its own humble part done and achieve the overall aim.

Why Australian? Because this country produces fine agricultural steel to back up its pedigree as a place with an impressive work ethic. As a bonus, if you’re dealing with an Australian firm, your spare parts don’t have far to travel -and when you need these things, you tend to need them in a hurry, because they go when the work is being done, not in some convenient off-season. All of which points to us at Agrifarm Implements.

No one could accuse a slasher of subtlety. Efficiency, yes. Effectiveness, certainly. Subtlety, no. That’s what you need a finish mower for. The slasher does the grunt work before you get to the mowing stage. That’s why they are called something different, and the name sums up perfectly what you get. This is a swashbuckling piece of equipment that lays into rampant growth and gets it down to a manageable length so the fine-tuning and the cosmetic final steps can go ahead.

When you look at a large swathe of grass, unkempt and concealing who-knows-what, and imagine tackling it with a simple mower, it can seem like a daunting task, and indeed it would be because you would be using the wrong piece of equipment. Not up to the job and not only that: you would be damaging the mower itself. While a nice, neat piece of grass looks like the most docile of surfaces, it doesn’t get like that without a bit of discipline, and the slasher can play the vital first part in the process.

Slashers are the machine-era descendants of the machete and the grass hook, but without the requirement for human muscle to be deployed with back-breaking exertion in unnatural positions. Today’s slashers deal with the preliminary work of cutting grass with no apparent effort, just as mowers can run rings around a pair of shears.

Choosing the Right Slasher: Speed, Durability, and Design Factors

Slashers comprise a battery of rotating blades beneath a canopy designed to prevent the cut material from dispersing too widely. Just as the mudguards on a cycle or motorcycle keep the splatter under control, so the slasher’s body contains the debris, leaving the resultant mulch where it is needed, in an orderly strip.

The action of a slasher inevitably flings not just vegetation but debris such as stones around the place, so the body must be tough enough to withstand the onslaught, just as the blades do.

Body design has a lot to do with a particular slasher’s tendency to catch moisture and become caked with debris, which can affect efficiency, so it is worth discussing this with your supplier, along with the more obvious points such as speed and durability. Laminated blade beams, swing-back blades and adjustable side skirts are other considerations.

Which Slasher is the Best for You?

If you have never bought a slasher before, it would be a good idea to get expert advice before going ahead. Even if you have experience in this area, it is something you don’t do every year, and progress is always being made in gardening and agricultural machinery, so it pays to find out what’s new, what’s essential and equally what is overrated, so you can use your budget wisely.

Those looking after farm property including paddocks will have different needs from, for instance, councils who have public safety more prominently in mind. Buying quality farm machinery is always wise, and cost is an ever-present compromising factor that has to be balanced against the desire to get the very best. Sometimes, though, you can see sense as opposed to short-term gain, and with a slasher you want to make sure it’s working well from day on and still giving you good service many years down the line.

Mowing the lawn is, for many people, a chore. It is something that has to be done from time to time and the faster the better. A quick trim and forget about it for a while. But what about the old adage, “If a job is worth doing, it’s worth doing well”? What about giving yourself a lawn to be proud of? While a rotary mower will do the job with no problem as you race it around your green square metres, it doesn’t give you the best result possible. For that, you need the help of a roller to apply a bit of pressure to the freshly cut blades and give the smoothness that makes all the difference.

Sports: The Inspiration of the Roller Lawn Mower

Two of the sports that flourish in Australia are cricket and tennis. Both of these are, or were originally, played on grass, and although the latter can also take place on hard courts, the sport is still officially lawn tennis.

In cricket, the appearance of the cut square that is the focus of the action is just one facet of the task. With a hard leather ball with a rugged seam being bounced off the surface, wooden bats being banged into it and spike-soled boots careering up and down, for the sake of safety, the surface needs to be stable, and rollers are used for that. They may be considerably more substantial than what you will need on your domestic patch, but the principle is the same.

Lawns are not purely for looking at; they are for walking on, for entertaining on, for adults to stand around on while enjoying a barbecue and for kids to kick a ball around on. In short, they need the attention of someone who may not have all a professional groundsman’s skills but understands the basics. And that includes using a roller mower to good effect.

Earning Your Lawn Stripes

That striped effect that looks so good on a lawn was imposed upon us by the simple action of the cylinder mower that was prevalent for so many years. Because the blades cut the grass from front to back and when you reached the end and turned around, they cut the next strip in the other direction, the natural flattening of each created a different shade. When rotary mowers were introduced, with their blades whipping the tips off the grass in a circular motion, the natural one-direction flattening was lost. How to bring it back? The farm equipment manufacturers of the world quickly came up with a solution: put a roller on the mower, behind the blades, so that no sooner were they cut than they were rolled in that smartly uniform way.

Choosing Your Roller Mower

As always, this is a question of horses for courses. The size of your patch and what you use it for will dictate the size and weight of your roller mower. If you are not sure exactly what you need, consult a good supplier and make sure you get the one that punches the right weight.

So, do you really need a roller mower? It’s all a matter of pride in your work. Do you want to knock the job off fast and have done with it or do you want to knock it off equally fast and do a job you can be proud of?

Forests are wonderful things, with many benefits for the world, from providing food and shelter to, as we now know, acting as “lungs” that purify the air. But sometimes these natural wonders have to be taken in hand because left to their own devices they can be unruly and troublesome. Invasive plants can make life difficult for animals and humans alike – or they can simply get in the way of your plans for the area. Those plans may not even be for the direct benefit of mankind. In many applications, the idea is to improve conditions for the animals who live wild there – game birds, deer and so on – which it is in the landowner’s interests to help.

A forestry mulcher, essentially a rotary drum with steel teeth or blades, can be similarly essential to the work of conservation organisations and clubs that operate in forested areas. Government departments, too, have work to do in this field, keeping things in order and ensuring clarity in terms of right-of-way, for instance. In such circumstances what is needed is a forestry mulcher, a multitasking machine that takes rampant growth and turns it to your advantage by helping to nourish the earth from which it sprang. So, how does a forestry mulcher work?

How a Forestry Mulcher Outperforms Standard Brush Cutters

A forestry mulcher can also be known as a brush cutter because that is one of its functions. It’s a name, though, that downplays the mighty mulcher’s role, because you find small machines called brush cutters in hardware stores and they are really one step up from a lawn trimmer, capable of dealing with undergrowth that is a tougher proposition than grass. A forestry mulcher can make mincemeat of this kind of opposition and much bigger, hardier bushes – because it is a lot more powerful than the domestic ones that rejoice in the name. Be that as it may, the brushcutting capability of the forestry mulcher helps to make it the allrounder that it is. It is easier to get at the big stuff you have to deal with when you’ve tamed the surrounding area.

Why Forestry Mulchers are Essential for Effective Land Clearing

Because there is a lot more to a fully-fledged forest than a few spindly trees and some bushes, a true forestry mulcher has to have the ability to see off substantial trunks before turning them into mulch, that wonderfully natural material that can be spread on the ground to preserve moisture in the soil and inhibit unwanted vegetation. In this way, the good work you have done in clearing the area is more likely to last, although of course nature won’t take it lying down and will keep pushing back. Perhaps the forestry mulcher will never replace the lumberjack, but in many cases, it will do the job.

Those who are unsure about exactly what machine will do the job for them should consult a supplier and outline what they’re dealing with. At Agrifarm Implements, we have supplied machinery for a huge variety of projects and through our relationships with customers we have learned how we our equipment has helped them, sometimes in ways we hadn’t imagined. Your project will probably have unique features but also plenty in common with tasks we have been set before.

A mulcher is a piece of agricultural equipment designed to convert organic waste materials like grass clippings, crop residue, and various types of plant matter into mulch. This mulch can then be reintroduced into the soil, enriching it with essential nutrients and enhancing its moisture-retention capabilities. Mulchers come in various forms, from simple hand-held devices for small-scale gardening to large, industrial-grade machines designed for extensive agricultural operations. Their primary function is to break down organic matter into smaller pieces, making it easier for the soil to absorb the nutrients. By using a mulcher, farmers can efficiently recycle plant waste, reduce the need for chemical fertilizers, and promote sustainable farming practices.

Mulching is a concept that has been around probably much longer than it has had that name. It was way ahead of its time, in fact, because while the modern trend of reusing, recycling, repurposing and all the other buzzwords might seem like a 21st-century innovation, it is simple common sense when you think about it. What comes out of the ground in your patch has brought with it nutrients that can usefully be returned whence they came, so rather than paying for what you put in, you can just put it back.

The other benefit of mulching is the way it can help to retain moisture in the soil, which can be a huge help, particularly in dry areas and during uncharacteristically dry spells.

That, in a nutshell, is how mulching works. So how do mulchers work? They take care of the process of making what you have removed from the soil or cut off the top of the vegetation suitable for being out back on it.

How Does a Mulching Mower Save Time and Effort?

If what you are cutting is grass for which there is no further purpose, all you will be doing is collecting it and finding somewhere to dump it, which is time-consuming and unproductive. Even for a domestic gardener with a relatively small patch to tend, emptying the cuttings bag is an unwelcome part of the process. When you’re whizzing around your square metres getting the job done, it’s frustrating having to stop now and then to get rid of the debris.

In a commercial setting, time is money and if you can be redistributing the grass as mulch, so much the better. And there is also the saving the saving on fertilizer to take into account. Your recycled grass might not provide everything you need, but it can certainly help.

Those who are dealing with consumable crops have an even better source of nutrition at their disposal. If you have what amounts to debris from wheat, maize, sorghum, rice or cotton stubble, tobacco or potato haulms or prunings from macadamia, grape or banana crops, you can turn it to your advantage. Suddenly it’s not debris anymore but something useful that can not only help the soil but contribute to the budget in a good way. We even have a special range aimed at sweet potatoes, with their particular requirements.

Australian Expertise for Australian Customers

We are proud to be an Australian company and to be able to draw on expertise going back more than half a century. While the company was formed in 1986, our principals have been doing this type of work since 1962, so there is not much in the mulching world that we haven’t seen. This knowledge has been used in the design and specifications of our machinery, which is second to none. Bring your machinery back to us in 15, 20 or 25 years for refurbishment and we will be glad to help you because we think long-term. Of course, you’re going to need spare parts in the meantime, and the fact that we are based in this country means we can get you sorted out quickly.

So, how do mulchers work? They work by improving your soil, improving your productivity and saving you money. And our mulchers give you reliability and reassurance – never underestimate that.

While a neatly trimmed patch of grass of whatever size might look like a civilised, gentle bit of collaboration between plant life and human beings, there is a lot more to it than that. Leave that patch to its own devices for a while and it will revert to type, which to us looks like growing wild. The gardener or groundsman wants to see uniformity and order in that swathe of green.

While rewilding might be an appropriate option for a few, destined to be featured in the gardening section of a Sunday paper, the vast majority of us want our grass tamed and orderly, and if it has been allowed to grow unchecked before we reach the primping stage involving a subtle machine, we might have to bring in the big guns. It’s not so much a question of finishing mower vs slasher, because they are not in competition. They can be part of the same process, the slasher paving the way for the finish mower.

How the Slasher Paves the Way

Everybody who tends to grass needs a finishing mower because it puts the finishing touches to the area, producing the resulting smoothness that has people talking about green baize and billiard tables. But in certain applications, before we reach that stage and before the decorators move in, we need the building machinery, which in this case means something with the strength and swashbuckling capability to knock your overgrown, swaying patch into shape. Slasher vs finishing mower, if you like. The slasher followed by the finishing mower, in fact.

Degrees of Difficulty: Slasher Options

Depending on the nature of what you’re dealing with, you might need a lightweight slasher, or to continue the boxing analogy, a middleweight or even a heavyweight: all tough characters suited to certain types of jobs.

If you want to get technical, our slashers range from 40HP with adjustable side skids and body reinforcement through 75 HP with a 5mm plate body with Z-formed front and rear aprons for maximum strength, and on up to a real high ratio gearbox with 300mm underbody clearance from blade cutting edge with swing back blades and multi-leaf bisalloy blade beams.

Check out the individual models and their specs can leave a purchaser in doubt that they are opting for the right farm equipment, so it can pay to discuss it with a reputable supplier. If you would like to talk to us about your specific needs, you can call, fax or email, or fill in the online contact form and we’ll get back to you. We will recommend the best model for your requirements because we want our customers to be suitably geared up for the challenge. All our modes are superbly designed and constructed, and you can bring them back to us for refurbishment in 15, 20 or even 25 years, but you’ve got to have the right piece of kit in the first place. As for spares, we’re an Australian company, so we’re right here to help you.

Finish mower vs slasher: maybe you only need the finisher or maybe you also need the slasher, to restore order in the first place. Our customers range from people with sizeable gardens to councils with parks to look after (and those can come in a variety of styles) to those who supply turf for sports grounds.

Whatever your application, we’ve got what you need.

Grass is used all over the world because of its ability to cover patches of ground ranging from domestic lawns to parks. That’s when it is not being used to feed animals. Its versatility makes it one of the global natural wonders. Versatility and tenacity, that is. The natural state of grass is a bit rough and ready, so if you’re using it for what amounts to decoration, you need to keep on top of it. And the culmination of the process for a substantial lawn involves a finish mower.

If your grass has been allowed to run riot, you will have dealt with that with the appropriate machinery, so what is a finish mower used for? You could call it the fine-tuning, the final trim and brush-up. It’s the lawn equivalent of making sure your hair looks good before you go out. With a finish mower, you are making the lawn look its best, not just for the sake of visitors but for your own personal pride.

Can a Finish Mower Cut Longer Grass?

A good finish mower can handle longer grass, but that is not its primary job. Of course, it depends on your circumstances. If you are tackling a tract of land that hasn’t been tamed before or has been allowed to go wild, who knows what is out there in terms of other, tougher plants and hidden debris? You don’t want to risk your state-of-the-art finishing tool on that when it has been designed and manufactured with subtlety in mind.

On the other hand, if you are tending an area that has been looked after well in the past and it has just got a bit longer and more unkempt, a finish mower should do the job for you.

Professional turf growers, for instance, will have seen their patch of merchandise grow from baby sprouts of new life to full-strength grass capable of supporting whatever activity it is destined for, be that decorative or sporting.

One thing everyone has in common is that the appearance at crucial times has to be immaculate. That is what a finish mower is used for.

Why Choose a Finish Mower from Agrifarm Implements?

Our products are designed and manufactured with longevity in mind. Heavy-duty construction means you can go about your business safe in the knowledge that your finish mower is up to the job. Sure, there are cheaper options around, but low initial costs can come back to bite you in the trailer.

Anyway, we offer a whole of life cost. You can bring your machine back to us in 15, 20 or 25 years for refurbishment. That means your wise purchase will keep paying dividends over the years while the cheaper options have bitten the dust and lie around the place, rusting and ugly.

Our company is Australian owned and our farm machinery is Australian-made, which not only means it benefits from the skills and dedication of our workforce but when spare parts are needed – and of course, they will be from time to time – you can get them from us quickly rather than watching the grass grow while some part makes its way from the other side of the world.

In conclusion, what is a finish mower for? For finishing the job. What is an Agrifarm Implements finish mower for? For finishing the job in style and with reliability and peace of mind.
